What I don't like about New Zealand
I left the UK at ~25 to live in the Netherlands; at 33 I left the Netherlands for New Zealand, where I am now.
Life in the Netherlands spoiled me. Between a culture I adore (so much so I naturalised) and the ubiquitous DigiD, I had very little to complain about. Life in New Zealand feels like stepping back in time. I have struggled with this, since if it weren't for my circumstances, I wouldn't not have moved here.
Living here, you will hear a lot about 'no. 8 wire' mentality. The idea is that kiwis use whatever is on hand to get the job done; ingenuity basically. But the other side of the same coin is mediocrity. As I write this, I recall an old Sun Microsystems advert where some IT manager is trying to brag about his new Dell servers and at some point says "good enough is still good, right?". The implication is that no, it's not (and you should buy Sun instead!)
I think it's this, above all else, that I do not like about New Zealand; my lived experience so far is that is just seems quite often to be a proxy for laziness. It's visible in all kinds of ways: work, public services, supermarkets, banking. I'm sure in some bygone era this attitude was necessary for survival, but in an age of plenty, it seems to have morphed into something else?
I do enjoy my life here, and New Zealand definitely has its benefits, but I just need to get this off my chest.
